Rod Making and Restoration Supplies

Montague NPB Ferrules - I have a few unused vintage Montague Rod Co. ferrules. These are the OEM step down or shouldered ferrules. Also some straight tube style are available.  These ferrules are impossible to find these days as current ferrules are made using straight tube ferrules. Please measure the outside diameter of the male slide & the length of each piece and see if we can match it. Go to the online store for sizes available $25.00 ea

Granger Butt Ferrule - Used nickel silver 19/64" female butt ferrule 2 incised bands, alignment mark, waterproofed with 3 VERY minor marks on welt. I.D.=.297".  $20.00

Orvis Style NS Ferrule - Chrome plated NS waterproofed ferrule. 18/64" or .282" OD of male ferrule. Straight tube female, machined welt. Includes Male & Female pieces  $45.00

Tonkin Cane 12' Bamboo Culms - Superb quality cane. While I'm not a cane expert, I think that fresh cane ought to be better than old cane... less bugs, less culling of old stock and more natural oils of the cane still there. The classic rod makers used fresh cane, not 50 yr old stock... No growers marks, very straight cane of A+ quality. All 2-2.5" at the butt. I put a split in the cane to minimize additional natural splitting. Have to cut them in half to ship. Please include your city & zip code with your inquiry so I can estimate your shipping cost. $28/culm plus $2.00/cut

Tonkin Cane in B+ quality is available at a super low price. This cane is perfect for the nodeless rod maker or beginner that wants to hone his skills without paying the premium price for the best culms. It's also good for the maker that flames his rods. These culms are above average in power fibers, straight but have one or two defects such as growers marks, water stains or maybe a section between nodes that has a defect. However, if it is near the end or middle where it can be cut away, the culm is still perfectly usable but you'll lose 10-18 inches which is no big deal. $14.00 plus $2.00/cut. If you wish to buy 10 or more expect a good discount!

Rod Bags - Protect your heirloom or valuable bamboo fly rod. Made of 100% cotton Khaki, a few different sizes are available. Currently I have them for 7' 2/2, 7.5' 2/2 7.5' 3/2, 8' 2.2, 8' 3/2,  8.5' 3/2 rods, 9' 3/2 and 9.5' 3/2, 10' 3/2 rods with more sizes coming. These rod bags are similar to the Granger style and are sized with approximately a 1/2" over-length and with a sewn loop added for easier removal from the tube and to hang to allow the rod to air dry in the bag.  Currently out of stock. Trying to find new sewing factory so bags not currently available.

I have available rod sacks for 8-9' 3/1 rods. $9.95. 7'-9' 2/1 sacks $8.95. No two tip sacks available.

Nickel Silver Snake Guides - Here you go! If you've needed some NS snakes to complete your restoration of that classic rod, now I can make them for you. I leave the feet unflattened and the length oversized so that you can match the feet exactly to the old guides for that perfect restoration. To finish them you need a hammer and a punch to flatten the guide and then you file to shape. Size #4-#1/0.  $1.25 each.

Genuine Perfection Co. Tungsten Steel Bronze Snake Guides - Here you go! If you've needed some genuine original vintage snakes for your restoration of that classic rod, I have a limited supply available. $2.75/guide from #3 to 0/1 for that perfect restoration. Almost out.

Spar Varnish, Clear Lacquer, Shellac Color Preserver & Oil-based stain - If you just need to do a couple of minor repairs, I can sell you a 1 oz bottle of clear lacquer or shellac for color preserver (which will do 5-10+ rods) and a 1 oz bottle of genuine spar varnish... enough to refinish at least a couple fly rods. Varnish needs to be warmed up before using... The stain is very useful when you need to darken the varnish to match dark varnish I carry two colors, a oak stain to give a mellow yellow finish and a mahogany finish for a darker reddish tone. The spar varnish is the old, pre-clean air formula which is superior in every way...  Please specify which finishes you want. $2.50 ea,  or $6.00 for three bottles. 2 oz bottles of spar varnish $4.00 ea.

 Rod Building & Restoration Tools

HOCK Plane Blades - In Stock!  Now you can buy the best replacement plane blades that all the pros rave about! Each blade is individually wrapped and includes comprehensive instructions on how to sharpen the blade RAZOR sharp! The BL162 is for US made Stanley and Record 9-1/2 block planes and the BL138 blades are for the US made Stanley and Record 60-1/2 low angle block planes. To determine if these blades will fit your plane, these blades have a 7/16" oval slot. The English planes have a 5/8" oval slot. These blades also fit many other block planes so please inquire as to the availability. BL162 $26.50, BL138 $24.50

Scarfing Block Tool - Here's the tool that every rod maker and rod restorer should own... Used for building nodeless rods  and to repair broken tip sections so you can restore that classic, historical or fishing rod to its full, original length. This special tool will pay for itself the FIRST time you use it to restore a tip section! Blocks are made of Poplar and will give many years of service with normal use. Both are based on the Garrison designs with several design modifications for improved use when scarfing tip sections.  Two versions. First one is designed primarily for making nodeless rods and we added a second groove to be able to scarf most tip sections as well. I've had excellent feedback on this tool. One restorer says he's scarfed so many tip sections with this one that he's almost worn it out! Everyone that has purchased this block has reported excellent results.  #SPLICEB $45.00  Out of stock. Not accepting orders for this tool at this time.

The Second design is a la Garrison also and will scarf almost ANY rod section, not just tips. This design is more complex. The way it holds the rod section in place is requires many more steps in order to manufacture them and we're having some technical difficulties. Not for building nodeless rods. #SCARFB $55.00. Construction delays, Not accepting orders at this time.

Stanley 9 1/2 Block Planes - Used vintage Stanley or made by Stanley planes available. I have several but each is individually priced depending on condition, age, model etc. These older ones have superior plane irons over the new planes available today. Prices vary depending upon condition and maker currently I have several that are excellent user planes. 40-60 years old, some minor loss of japanning but the soles are excellent. All planes require tuning and sharpening for rodmaking use.  $40-55

Stanley 60 1/2 Block Planes - Used vintage Stanley or made by Stanley planes are often available here. I just got several, but need time to inspect them and price them... the older ones have superior high carbon steel plane irons over new planes. Prices vary depending upon condition and maker $40-50

Cotton Rod Binding Thread - Large 6000 yard spools of 100% cotton 16/4 thread.  Made in USA. A lifetime supply for most rodmakers. Excellent value, strong, white thread. $10.00

Alcohol Lamps - Brand New Glass Alcohol Lamp $11.95.

Vintage Alcohol Lamps - Here's a few alcohol lamps that I've been collecting. These are made around the turn of the century. The brass lamps are particularly nice for bamboo rod rest orating and rod building. Wide base, hard to tip over. Why buy new when you can buy antique... I've found about 5-6 more gorgeous lamps! Glass and brass and all brass! Many to choose from, starting prices from $35.00

Thompson's Rod Wrapping Tool - This is the real deal! This wrapping device works great! I use one myself. Much better than the thread tensioners that squeeze the thread between two disks... those add fuzzies. Very Collectible tool. Not a reproduction. Complete with a photocopy of the instructions for use. This is a great tool for wrapping your rods. This is the first Thompson rod wrapping too that is made of aluminum. Cane or graphite. EX condition. One available both with the original wire rod holder!  $85.00.

Rod Finishing/Drying Turning Motors - Now, two different speed motors to choose from. I now sell a 10 rpm and a 20rpm motor that is fully assembled and ready to use. It is complete with cord and on/off switch. It is freestanding and very heavy duty. Makes easy work out of applying lacquer or varnish to your wraps. $25.00 each.

Starrett #436 Micrometer 0-1" - Very early micrometer in original box (poor condition, wrapped with tape). Complete with the factory wrench for servicing and adjusting and the original, instructions, both in excellent condition, conversion charts and catalog info. This is their most popular micrometer and they have been making this same mic for over 50 years. This one I'd guess is at least 50+ years old judging from the condition of the original printed cardboard box. It works perfect but it does show honest wear from use. This one retails today for $83.00. With box, instructions, wrench... $25.00.

Free! Starrett Conversion Charts - Here's a couple of handy charts by Starrett that you can instantly convert thousandth of an inch into fractions of an inch perfect for ferrule measuring. The other is converting millimeters to decimals. These are really great for quickly determining which Heddon taper you have or for rod making work. Starrett sent me a bundle of them by mistake so they're free on request with any order while supplies last.

Miscellaneous

Used Double Taper Silk Fly Lines - Last one... dry and in excellent used condition, here's a way to try your hand casting a real silk fly line without spending $240+ on a new silk line. Check out the silk line reconditioning page on this site. Lines should be reconditioned before casting/fishing, but it is dry and appears strong. One left, line size is a 9wt DT $95.00.

Vintage Wood Fly Line Dryer and Silk Fly Line - Probably made 50-70 years ago. Made of wood with a doweled drum for rapid drying. Has a reel holder for quick and easy operation. Has that "it's old but works great" look... I'll include the silk line listed above $90.00.

Vintage Metal Fly Line Dryer and Silk Fly Line - Probably made 40-50 years ago. Made of metal with four arms and a table clamp for use anywhere. Has part of the original box  and label. Works okay but I've seen superior designs. I'll include a used silk line that is about a 4/5 wt line... it's short... maybe 10-15 yards long. $49.00.

Gudebrod Silk Fly Line - Unused silk fly line, complete with gold foil tag. The line is level line size E (5wt) and while new, is quite sticky. Excellent display collectible. This is my only Gudebrod line and is a fine collectible from a company still in business. If you want to fish it, check out the instructions on how to recondition a silk fly line on this web site.$75.00

Leather Goods

Fly Book - Very old leather fly book circa 1920'-30's. a few old flies included. $20. Scans available on all items listed.

L. L. Bean Leather Rod Case - Flat, black leather rod case that's zippered to provide easy access to you bamboo or graphite rods. The leather is in excellent condition, no cracking, supple and very useable. Labeled LL Bean inside case. $75

Leather Tubular Rod Case - Attractive and distinctive rod case that is the perfect compliment to your bamboo fishing rods. This hand made case is made of quality full grain leather and is in remarkable condition considering it's age. It's unmarked but looking at my various catalogs it appears to have been made around the turn of the century, but I can't substantiate it. It may be newer as the condition of the leather is so good. Protect your metal rod case when transporting your rods. Most collectors don't know that leather goods such as this are quite scarce and most don't seem to have survived the test of time so collectibles such as this are excellent values. $125.

HEDDON Dowagiac Leather Tubular Rod Case - SUPER RARE and distinctive rod case that is the perfect compliment to your Heddon Dowagiac bamboo fishing rods. This handsome hand made case is made of quality full grain leather and is in good condition considering it's age the cap's stitching is coming apart and the leather strap that holds the cap in place and goes thru a buckle has torn at both ends, but the original buckle is intact and if one wanted to restore this angling artifact to be serviceable, it would not take much to do so... Historical items, I leave in original condition for the long term collector to decide how best to preserve this fine antique. It's marked Heddon Dowagiac on the leather handle and came with two Heddon Dowagiac bait rods that were built in the 1910's before World War I. Wow, . Leather goods usually don't survive well that are this old and are usually overlooked by even the most astute collectors. Considering that quality cases such as this were quite expensive back then and that to find one made and marked by Heddon is rarer still. But, several of my collector friends have never seen one of these in 20-30 years of collecting and they were salivating over this rare and important angling artifact. Hey, it's useful too. You can store one or two of your rods in it... Most collectors don't know that leather goods such as this are quite scarce and most don't seem to have survived the test of time so collectibles such as this are excellent antique collectibles. Available for $200.
